December holiday events in Hermanus include many weekly markets, but Christmas time brings out some special Christmas ones full of hand-made goodies that are perfect for special gifts. The NG Kerk in the Main Road holds a widely acclaimed Christmas Market in the Grobbelaar Hall during the first or second week of December. This market sells everything from mouth-watering home-baked treats to toys and jewellery and books and pottery with a difference. The Hermanus Bowling Club hosts its Christmas fair around the same time and it also has an assortment of arts, crafts and great food to satisfy everybody. Camphill, the local school and care centre for those with special needs, hosts a Christmas market too that sells food, white elephant, second hand clothes, toys, books, jewellery and much more – even pony and train rides. All of the money made goes to funding Camphill that runs entirely on donations, adding an extra strand of giving to the fun you’ll have browsing the beautiful farm premises. The hugely popular Twilight Market, held every Wednesday night, starts during the month of December as well. An afternoon continuation of the Hermanus Country Market, the Twilight Market has fun and food for everybody and encourages everybody and their dog to come along for great food, better shopping and the best atmosphere. this market and the Lemm’s corner market are all within walking distance from Eastbury Cottage. There are a range of other markets that usually happen during the Christmas season so you should keep an eye out for posters or posts in the local newspaper, the Hermanus Times, for more information.

Hermanus Markets and stalls I love Hermanus

Rotary Hermanus holds a ‘Carols by Candlelight’ every year, usually in The Old Harbour or the outdoor amphitheatre just next door. The event is always tons of fun for the whole family and gives you a chance to experience the beauty and community of Hermanus with the lights twinkling on the water just behind you.   Usually held on the last Friday before Christmas, a small donation buys you a candle in a bottle and a carols hymn sheet.

Holiday workshops, art classes and activity programs have been set up for the children and they range from photography and Christmas-gift making to treasure hunts, magic shows, walks, tea parties and sand castle building. Contact the Hermanus Tourism Bureau on 028 3122629 for more information.

Then, of course, there are the beautiful beaches of Hermanus that sport  lifeguards for your safety.  Snack counters also present themselves for your convenience during the holiday season. Every beach has stretches of brilliant white sand and most have changing facilities as well as restaurants close by.  More activities for children can be found on our blog.

Christmas specials abound in Hermanus’ shops and there’s always the friendly shop-window dressing and light competition to witness as shops try to outdo each other with their brilliant Christmas displays.

The churches of Hermanus have Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services as well as nativity plays and other activities that can also be found in the local Times of Hermanus Newspaper.

Some restaurants of Hermanus even open for Christmas Day lunches, offering buffets or amazing menus that deviate from their norm to make sure everybody is appropriately ” full to bursting”.   The Hermanus Information Office will have a list of these restaurants ready every year so give them a call for more information on 028 3122629.

Christmas in Hermanus is full of sunshine, festivities and a number of opportunities to find quaint home-made gifts for those special to you and let your children’s creativity run wild.  Just keep an eye out for all the posters and don’t be afraid to ask around – you wouldn’t want to miss out!
