Hermanus Kalfiefees

Join us for the Hermanus Kalfiefees every August!

The Hermanus Kalfiefees – meaning “Calf Festival” in Afrikaans – usually happens over the Women’s Day long weekend in August, about a month before the Whale Festival.  It is Hermanus’s version of a pre-party. Running for a bit longer than the Whale Festival, the Hermanus Kalfiefees boasts its own selection of marquees, shows, general entertainment, specials and crafts. While perhaps not yet as popular as its big sister the Hermanus Whale Festival, the Hermanus Kalfiefees is still a weekend of jubilant celebration, good food, wonderful entertainment and enthralling visual arts and crafts.

The Kalfiefees produces a line-up of shows that range from drama to children’s plays, some of which come hot and fresh off of the stage at the KKNK (Little Karoo National Arts Festival) and the Grahamstown Arts Festival, two of the biggest and most sought-after festivals in the whole of South Africa. The music selection is just as diverse. Shows range from well-known musicians and singers to a selection of local choirs, from gospel to rock and from comedy to haunting relevance. Along with the entertainment there are also a few good chances to have your mind challenged and your views heard – as was the case in the 2012 breakfast debate that dealt with the subject that local ruling structures are reachable in an economic sense.

Although the vast majority of the shows are in Afrikaans, for those who don’t speak the language, there is still the great art and even greater food to act as a magnet. This is especially true as the Hermanus Wine and Food Festival happens at the same time as the Kalfiefees .

The exact dates of the Kalfiefees are posted on http://www.kalfiefees-hermanus.co.za/ usually during June or earlier each year.
