Hermanus Whale Festival – Have a whale of a time!

It’s only fitting that the best land-based whale watching destination in the world hosts an annual welcoming celebration for the giants of the ocean. And what a celebration the Hermanus Whale Festival is! Running in September every year, the festival attracts people from all over the world with its art, music, food, things to do and wonderful atmosphere.

Naturally, the Southern Right whales are the stars of the weekend-long festival. With hundreds of whales in the bay those who attend the festival are sure to be blessed with the sights of fully grown whales and their calves playing and showing off in the water. The Hermanus Whale Crier who is the only whale crier in the world, acts as a proverbial spotlight, blowing on his kelp horn every time a whale is spotted so you can find them quickly and spend more time reveling in their majesty. For those who are not afraid to get their feet off the ground there are also daily boat and airplane trips where one can see the whales in a different kind of exhilarating experience. The Hermanus Whale Walk and Whale Museum offer interesting facts about the gentle giants of the sea, allowing every visitor to broaden his or her knowledge and thus be even more enthralled by the creatures.

Part of the celebration is, of course, the food, arts and crafts and music. Tents set up in the town centre offer a variety of stalls that sell crafts and food that hold something for everybody. There are numerous points in the town that offer daily entertainment by some of the country’s top musicians, comedians and actors. Along with the shows there is also the Whales and Wheels car show to wander around. A grand collection of stunning automobiles, the Whales and Wheels show is hugely popular and a definite must-see. For the kids at heart there are less adult-like stuff to do such as ride the selection of fairground rides, face-painting, fashion shows and arts and crafts. And, of course, the local Hermanus shops and restaurants pull out all the stops to give their great, diverse selection to whatever hungry mouth or delighted soul may ask for it.

The more active visitors can delight in the Half Marathon and the golf tournament, both which attract serious athletes and those who just want to have fun. The normal Hermanus activities – everything from shopping to paragliding – happily contribute to the welcome festivities for the VIP visitors of Hermanus. Along with its crispy, clear “Champagne” air, pristine water, majestic mountains and extraordinary fauna and flora there is no better place to come and celebrate in whichever way you love best.
