Be ready to push your taste buds to the limit at the annual Hermanus Wine and Food Festival…and, while you are enjoying the fine fare, be sure not to miss the arts and crafts and Afrikaans Theatre at the Hermanus Kalfiefees which happens annually during the same weekend in August! Hermanus is the place to be! Eastbury Cottage is only a few minutes drive to these celebrations.
Nominated as one of the ten best food and wine festivals in South Africa, this fair offers the chance to taste wine from over 70 local wineries. The three-day festival hosts more than 250 wines coming from regions spreading from Elgin to Elim as well as selections of cheese, olives, sushi and other culinary creations from local farms and restaurants. All the wine that can be tasted can also be bought at cellar door prices, thus causing the festival to act as a fantastic gateway into the acclaimed wines of the Overberg. Backed by spectacular meals on-the-go and lively music, the fair is a casual and very enjoyable way to spend the day or the weekend. The Hermanus Wine and Food Festival offers something for everybody – even the kids who have their own activity center to keep them as entertained as their parents. The festival is set in the Hemel en Aarde (Heaven and Earth) Valley, blessing its visitors with spectacular scenery and nature to add to the experience.
The Walker Bay wine region has grown from 6 producers in 1998 to more than 70 producers in 2013 and is still growing. Wines are exported to every continent on earth, even to Antarctica. More than 1600 labels of South African wines are on offer at the Wine Village in the Hemel-en-Aarde Village where the Wine and Food Festival is hosted. Daily presentations of at least six wines are on offer for tasting on any day of the week, not just at festival times.
With acclaimed wine, great local food and music and entertainment to tickle the fancy of every age and pallet, these two festivals which overlap, are definitely not to be missed. The whales are already playing in the bay, the fynbos flowers are blooming on the seafront cliff paths, the days are warmer, all adding many more great reasons to entice you to come along and have a good time.
