SPORT EVENTS IN HERMANUS

Hermanus is known as a town that boasts plenty of activities in which you can partake, no matter what the season or what your interests are and competitive sport events in Hermanus are filling the annual sporting calendar. Along with regular crowd-pleasers, Hermanus is the venue for some big sporting events that take place annually. There really is something to attract everybody, and these great days should not be missed!

February: Camphill Sports Challenge day. This family funday is set on the grounds of the Camphill school, an independent residential and day school for children and adults with special needs. Camphill prides itself in its arts and craft days as well as its wonderful, fresh produce that can be found on the Hermanus Country Market every Saturday. This Sports Challenge day encourages people of all ages to join in and have fun while supporting Camphill’s worthy cause. The day includes runs of different lengths, mountain bike rides and Boeresport, which includes egg races, sack races and tug-of-war.  For more information, please call 028 312 4949.

March: CANSA Relay for Life. While the date of this event is still to be confirmed, it is definitely something to look out for. The relay, set up in support of those with cancer and those who have lost a loved one to cancer, is a great experience for the whole family. Teams of ten to fifteen members take turns to walk or run around a track for twelve hours while various entertainments, information booths and food stalls keep the supporters and the teams motivated. Paper lanterns decorated for loved ones who passed due to cancer are placed all around the track to light the way of the walkers throughout the night. The goal is to keep at least one member of every team on the track for the entire twelve hours to symbolise that cancer – and the fight against cancer – never sleeps. May: Wheels and Runners Race. The exact date and venue of South Africa’s only fully integrated wheelchair and athlete race is still to be announced, so make sure to keep checking for more information. The Wheels and Runners race is greatly enjoyed by all those who enter and usually attracts a massive crowd of competitors and spectators alike. It promises to be an informative and immensely fun day for all. For more information, call the Access for Citizens Association on 028 3121889.

October: Berg and Beach Run. This two day run is highly anticipated and allows participants to enjoy the best of both worlds that Hermanus has to offer. The first day consists of a 23km coast run and the second day consists of a 27km mountain run or a 16km run. Both days start at the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, and it is possible to only sign up for one day. There is only space for 200 participants so bookings should be done as soon as possible. Contact Quantum Adventures for more information on 021 7890188.

Mid-December: Onrus Classic surf competition. Event dates still to be announced. This annual surf competition delves out great talent, phenomenal support and even better fun for the whole family. Onrus beach is a wonderful place to relax and play, and the waves are some of the best in the Hermanus area according to surfers. There’s entertainment, surfing talent, food and good fun in the sun and this day should not be missed.
